I'm a couple weeks behind in my reading, but last month Christianity Today ran a really interesting piece on why 20 and 30 somethings are leaving the church.
As someone who's spent much of the the last 15 years trying to help 18-22 year olds grow up into the church, this article struck a deep cord in me.
It's worth a read for anyone who's a 20 or 30 something, who's in church or para-church ministry, or who finds themselves one of those 20 or 30 somethings who left the church along the way.
Check it out here.

Man, I am late commenting on your post! I would add that sacrificing discipleship and Christian education in the church for the sake of evangelism and ministry (and wanting to make people feel good about themselves) produces Christians similar to those described in the Parable of the Sower where the seed fell among the rock, grew up, and then withered away (they had no foundation). Hardcore evangelical Christianity isn’t willing to dial back its outreach and ministries to establish a wholistic and balanced church. Thus, Christian education and discipleship suffer, and we don’t produce generational Christians.
